First moments:
- April 2011 marked a memorable time for us, for it was our first time touring in Europe own time, own pace and own schedule. Planning was a massive, but enjoyable, task and we were fortunate that things panned out quite smoothly. We went to 4 cities, Vienna, Salzburg, Bratislava and Munich during our 10-day trip. Weather was good, food was nice and the scenery was even better. We have seen the Alps, visited the castle and palaces and wandered in the beautiful old towns and cities.
- 2011 is also the year when I started my first business trips and I went on 2 (KL and Munich (for the 2nd time!))
- Decided to do something different and engage in something active, I got an online deal to learn to swing the club and hit the little white ball (aka golf). After 7 lessons, I finally got a proficiency certificate (which lasts for 1 year) though my ball tends to fly away from my target. Hahaha...

贴心 moment:
Does a typical guy stranger wait with someone for a taxi and only leave after she board the taxi? I never knew there was one - until I met one. It was one night in Oct, at around 10pm. Leaving office, I met this guy, whom I have never seen before, in the lift who was working late as well. We chatted for awhile on the way down and while exiting the building. I thought our conversation would end there - I thought, since I had decided to take a cab home, while he wanted to take a MRT ride. However, he decided to wait with me for a taxi and only proceed his journey after having seen me boarding a cab. It was the first time I have met a guy like that. Though we exchanged names and looked at each other for a little while during that short first exchange, little did I expect he would have remembered me - for I have almost forgotten who he was. Two months later, we were having a sale in our building which he came patronizing. I was surprised he could recognise me and even had one of the characters of my name correct. It was only then I realised who he was. Haha.. Since then, I have not met him anymore, but it was really nice of him :)

Fearful moments:
If you ask any person familiar with finance on his thoughts about 2011, probably one of these key words will pop up: PIIGS, inflation, euro debt, unemployment, US debt, downturn and crisis. 2011 has been a roller coaster for the markets and 2012 will continue to be so. What will happen to the world economy, specifically Europe, we shall await.

Wet moments:
Singaporeans will also remember 2011 as the year of rain, with unusual frequent rains poured onto this island towards the end of the year, and floods, or flash floods to be precise. The floods continued from 2010 when it was the first time in 50 years Singaporeans experienced flooding. Torrent rains brought flooding in the low lying areas, most notably Orchard Road. Even the road in front my office was filled with water. However, my first hand encounter with the floods was not at my office, but at Orchard Road. Days before Christmas, I was walking along the shopping belt while rain came pouring for a few hour, resulting in the accumulation of water along some stretches to come to ankle-deep and my shoes and lower half of my jeans were completely wet that I had to buy another pair of shoes.

Inspired moments:

Just came back from my one-month-older-than-me cousin's wedding. The above was the conversation at the end of the lunch with my uncle, the bride's father. Though the second answer was given in a joking, quarter-drunk manner, I could somehow sense that my parents' hearts were broken when they heard my reply. Never did I imagined that - if I had anticipated that, I would have given a more politically correct answer.

It was strange that no one could believe that I never had a boyfriend before. I don't remember that there's a rule somewhere saying that I must have a boyfriend. And most people think that the reason is because I set my standards too high, which I don't really think so. What I do admit that is that I am a close to 100% 宅女, as I am quite lazy to step out of my house without a purpose, and I am a really 慢热的人. I also admit that I am a bit over protective of myself and thus 不轻易与别人交心. A quote I read recently struck me: 伤心 vs 寂寞?Though one is a probability and the other is a certainty, sometimes we would rather take the certainty in order to avoid the risks...

Having been to China several times, I have "developed" some rules for traveling in the country:
Rule #1: Don't follow tours unless
(a) you are going to super ulu places
(b) your friends/family/companions insist.
Rule #2: Avoid super ulu places unless you are mentally prepared for "surprises".
Rule #3: For hotel conscious people, avoid self-rated hotels unless necessary. They usually require a 1-2 star discount.

Following Rules #1 & #2, we embarked on a tour to the capital, with my dad as the planner. With this being our 3rd time in the city, we skipped the usual tourist attractions such as 万里长城 and 天安门.

Going around Beijing is not an issue - with a grasp of Mandarin an advantage. However, non-Mandarin speaking tourists will not have much problem wandering around, as most signs now come with English translations (thanks to the Olympics I believe), though communicating with the locals may prove to be a little challenging. The most common transportation mode is the spiderweb network of subway, which costs RMB2 per trip, regardless of the distance.

As compared to our last visit, there have been much changes everywhere. Apart from the English signs, gone were the dark, narrow streets and dull-looking shopping centres, with large, bright, wide and modern streets and malls as their replacements. Almost everything is huge in China. Gigantic shopping malls, streets, museums, highways, stadium, etc.. Not only are the buildings huge, they are designed with the state-of-art architecture and equipped with up-to-date technology.

And if cleanliness has been an issue, I think the standard has improved greatly in Beijing (once again thanks to Olympics I believe). The public places are generally litter free and even some toilets are smell-free, with attendants cleaning frequently, some even as frequent as after ever use (I'm not kidding).

What surprises most this trip is the display and appreciation of creative arts in Beijing, making it a more vibrate and hip place. We have been to an arts village, where artistic and creative works are on display everywhere, and a lot of them are by the younger generation. There are also many shops in the city selling interesting and creative items. On the last day of our trip, we also enjoyed a play whose content I think it's rather 放.

Though there are still minor negatives, such as the never-ending traffic jam (even on off-peak hours) and constantly hazy air, it was overall a great trip =)
